Fortunately and unfortunately, just about anything can be purchased online in this day and age.
When purchasing any products whether they are creams, lotions or pills, it is extremely important to understand the source of the product. They are not all regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and therefore can pose a risk greater than the possible benefits.
Amazon reportedly pulled more than a dozen skin-lightening products from its website after there were multiple concerns of these products containing dangerous levels of mercury.
California has reported many poisonings from products that were linked to ‘foreign brand, unlabeled, and/or homemade skin creams’. These products also contained a form of mercury dangerous to the patients. One such patient reported to an ER with numbness in her hands and feet, slurred speech and trouble walking. It was noted she used an anti-wrinkle cream imported from Mexico that ended up being tainted with one of the most toxic forms of mercury, methylmercury.
With the power of the internet, the FDA is having difficulty keeping up with the constant changes of products, distributors and imports. The best rule of thumb is to know the source of your products. Even over-the-counter products in stores aren’t regulated and can still be compromised. a Doctor’s office will typically have the safest and most scientifically supported products available.
There are options available for moisture, acne, anti-aging, etc, but shop safely!
